My family (parents, wife and son) visited the Victoria Rd Deli & Bistro one hungry lunchtime during our annual Okanagan camping trip. We usually camp at the Peach Orchard campground in Summerland, and then travel around wine tasting, and eating in local restaurants.

The Victoria Rd Bistro & Deli is located in downtown Summerland, and owned/operated by gourmet couple Roger and Stephanie Gillespie.

The Bistro is well known for its fantastic paninis and has a brisk lunchtime trade considering its "small town" location. The Bistro recently opened its doors for dinner on a Friday night, which is a welcome addition to night-time dining in Summerland.

After eating at the Bistro our first visit, we went back twice more sampling virtually everything on the menu. We were struck by the great value the menu represented and just how fresh the ingredients were. Clearly the chef, Roger knew exactly what fresh local ingredients were available, and just how to use his considerable talents to prepare them for innovative and attractive dishes that tasted superb. Roger also took the time out to talk with me about his dishes, past experiences (he has worked in some of the finest restaurants and clearly has a packed resume!). Both Roger and Stephanie obviously enjoy a passion for food and wine that shines through their products, service and ambience.

The House smoked duck ham, and portobello mushroom, Balderson Cheddar and Basil Pesto mayo Panini is particularly delicious and my personal favorite, while my wife and son could not get enough of the Pomme frites made from potato, yam and parsnip.

The Bistro also features daily pasta specials well worth checking out. A minimalist but appropriate wine list matches all the dishes and is well priced.

The adjoining well stocked Deli has a very appealing supply of wonderful products, such as dried boar sausage and prosciutto di parma. Some local artisan cheesemakers such as Poplar Grove (Stephanie actually did an apprenticeship at their cheesemaking facility) have their cheeses on sale in the deli and can also be found on the menu in the Bistro.

If you venture through Summerland I urge you to make a lunchtime pit stop in Summerland to visit the Victoria Rd Bistro & Deli. You will thank yourself for taking the time out to enjoy a great local gem.
