Ajisai Sushi Bar

2081 W. 42nd Avenue

Vancouver V6M 2B4

Invited for lunch by a friend who lives in Dunbar, we decided to try this bar. Opening off a side-street, a long narrow room reminded us of a railroad station. Benches line the inside walls, while windows wrap around the outside. ‘Elegantly industrial’ said our friend of the floor-to-ceiling brick-oven structure jutting out from the wall and dividing the room in half.

Lunch is served until 2.00, so we arrived at 1.00, as the first lunch-time rush was beginning to thin out. We were promptly seated and served green tea, before settling into the daunting task of reading the vast list of specialties. For simplicity’s sake, and since it was our first visit, we chose the combo. But we each added a serving of barbecued eel, for a more adventurous bite. Several other customers, mostly Japanese, ate from appetizing-looking bento boxes.

Our combos were ample for a man, while two women might settle for sharing a plate.

We could have opted to sit at the bar where a group of customers were treated to non-stop entertainment as the sushi chefs wielded their sharp knives.

The bill came to $38 for 3 people. We would recommend this restaurant for a treat, a far from ordinary lunch.
